Military Veterans

Tomorrow Leaders in Action

Who is a Military Veteran?

According to The Military Act 18 of 2011, a South African citizen who rendered
service to any of the military organisations, which were involved on all the sides of
South Africa’s liberation war from 1960 to 1994, those who served in the Union
Defence Force before 1961, and those who became members of the South African
National Defence Force after.

Tomorrow Leaders in Action

Why military veterans?

TOLA views the military veterans structure as a very important strategic partner on
which it can leverage. TOLA also sees this structure as an anchor point to support its
future developments. This leadership group is rich in leadership skills earned over a
number of years in their services. After their service and when they retire most of
their skills become dormant, and rusted and sometimes never to be used again.
Therefore, TOLA is of the view that these skills are critical to contribute positively
in our nation building and mentoring our youth.

Tomorrow Leaders in Action

How do we see
this leadership structure?

TOLA would like to grow organically from Gauteng Province
to other provinces catering for children between 6-17 years
in leadership skills.

Firstly, out of the military veterans,
organisational structure is formed, which will function independently.

Secondly, the structure must identify and recruit other military veterans
in other provinces to increase the footprint and support as TOLA grows.
TOLA would want to build around a veteran as a centre point.

Lastly, the administration, the project management and leadership group
are comprised of team that will represent TOLA when TOLA is invited
for presentation in any area or on virtual means.

What are opportunities
on this partnership?

There are many opportunities to develop out of this relationship, such as the following:

  • Application of leadership skills as mentors to children thereby multiplying their influence.
  • Benefiting the nation to assist in moral regeneration and giving hope to the hopeless youth.
  • Acting as role models for the youth, thereby closing the gap that has long been taken by criminal elements.
  • Contributing back to the communities and being able to see positive change in families, communities’ societies and the nation at large.
  • When you teach, you learn more than a learner. So the veterans will also learn and experience things they never experienced in their military career by mere teaching and coaching kids as young as 6 years of age.
  • This project will offer veterans closer engagements with various communities and enable them to exercise their leadership skills and influence at a much bigger scale than they ever imagined.
  • Soldiers command respect from various and most communities of our country, and being part of this noble idea (TOLA) can only enhance the status of the whole Defense Force to the highest level, and thereby setting a stage and home for those who will retire in the future they ever imagined.

How do we view TOLA
in relation to Private sector?

The importance and the critical role that can be exercised by the Private sector in Corporate Social programmes cannot be over-emphasised. The triple bottom line (people, planet and profit) as stated in King’s commission of 1993, share a common factor that each captain of industry should recognise and more so to have a will to make it more actionable.
During the 2024 Middle East and North Africa Youth Employment Summit (MENA YES), His Excellence (HE) of Morocco explained that the Government of Morocco has set a target of creating 1 million jobs, of which 400 000 will be in the manufacturing sector.
He called on attendees to support in finding solutions to integrate young people into the workforce: “We count on you to enrich this new path, where Morocco is going, developing new opportunities for our young people, investing heavily to attract them, investing heavily to develop their skills, but more important, we need to find
new solutions to rebuild trust: trust in themselves, trust in their skills, trust in their ability to conquer the world.
And this is exactly the missing link, where we expect you to help us find new solutions”.

Tomorrow Leaders in Action as an organisation, seeks to find new solutions with the help of the private sector for the sake of giving hope to the SA children regardless of what is perceived by many as the hopeless and non-stoppable down-spiralling situation.
To the private sector our focus is clear, “prevention is better than cure” help us to attend and guide through mentorship of military veterans and other volunteers from the other sectors to equip them with skills that will sustain them to their adulthood, while still at the tender age.
We are counting on you to assist us in paving the way to a better future for South Africa and its society, especially our youth.
TOLA believes that youth ownership and leadership
in solutions can bring increased effectiveness and sustainability.
Meaningful youth inclusion together with capacity strengthening from the private sector will without a doubt yield positive results.
Therefore, breaking the cycle of poverty and pushing many families on a higher financial trajectory ever imagined, needs a coordinated and a coherent public – private - civil societies holding hands and working together to improve the lives of young people.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the children of South Africa are in a desperate need
of help from all of us, whether we are in the public or private sector, and or in a civil society. The social ills inundating our youth and perpetuating
the dire situation cannot continue business as usual.
TOLA has seen it fit to devise a strategic approach to try and address
these issues in a more systematic and sustainable way,
by training young children in skills which will make them a cut above the rest.
Furthermore, partnering with selected military veterans
provides TOLA with a national footprint ready to mentor
with discipline and leadership skills at any given time.
However, although Tomorrow Leaders in Action cannot say
that its approach and intervention strategies are silver bullets
or panacea to challenges facing our societies and the country.

But as our logo depicts, the infinity of information and knowledge,
so will be the brains of our young leaders of tomorrow.
Our young stars will radiate ideas like supernova
lighting up the whole country,
if not the universe, is what we believe.
Lastly, the private sector in support of this programme
will have a unique opportunity to be introduced to these
young stars at a very early age.
